Institute for Government

The Institute for Government, founded in 2008, is the UK’s leading independent think tank working to make government more effective. We focus on how government is led and scrutinised, how decisions are made – and how government can work better.

We undertake and share rigorous data-led and evidence-based research, provide instant expert analysis and commentary, and host events – both public seminars and private roundtables – that bring together fresh thinking, insight and expertise on the issues that really matter to government.

Our inspirational IfG Academy programme also provides opportunities for ministers, shadow ministers, and senior civil servants to understand their roles, and develop skills to better equip them for life in government.

We have strong relationships across the political spectrum and throughout government. To help us develop and share our ideas and recommendations, the IfG works with all the main political parties in Westminster, senior civil servants, regional and local officials and politicians, and a wide range of academic institutions, charities, and businesses.

The Institute for Government is an independent charity with cross-party governance. The IfG receives its core funding Gatsby Charitable Foundation, one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts.
